BUILDING CONFIDENCE
Leadership Lesson#5
Be a People Builder
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Great leaders partner with their people. They believe every person in the organization plays a vital role in the organizations's success, and they treat each person with respect," says JP Maroney in chapter 5 of the new book, "The Leadership Path."
Even if you are not in a leadership position, you can be a leader by doing some of the following things. Try some this week.
1. Identify your own strengths and weaknesses. Focus on excelling in the areas where you are the strongest, and find other people to help out where you have weaknesses.
2. Show interest and concern for the people you work with by spending time getting to know them. This may mean going out to lunch or doing something together after hours.
3. Give others praise when you see someone doing a good job. Try to be specific and spontaneous. when you catch them in the act of doing something right. You can say something like, "Wow, I was really impressed at how you handled that difficult customer."
4. Make other people look good by introducing them to others mentioning something important they are doing.
5. Build trust by being honest and by keeping your commitments.
You do not have to be in a leadership position to act like a leader. Practicing leadership skills will build your confidence at work and in your personal life.
*** Learn more about developing communities in chapter 4 of the new book, "The Leadership Path," a compilation of advice from 12 experts in the field of leadership. See order information below.
